No extra Synthroid for you!
Ugh. The doc's office just called to say my thyroid hormone levels look normal, so I won't get an increase in my Synthroid dose. I really can't believe it. I'm so obviously off from my normal self, but I guess that's something blood tests don't necessarily show.

Is your doctor using old standards? Acceptable TSH numbers have gone down as tests have become more accurate, and not all doctors keep up with it.

Good guess, I don't know. I'm going to give it a few more days just to see if I can ride this funk out, but if nothing improves, I'm thinking to go see my general physician and I'll mention what you said to her to see if she wants to give my results a different interpretation. Thanks!

For most people, the TSH shouldn't be higher than the 2-3 range. I hope it works out.

Wait -- see, this is part of the problem: I'm thinking really slowly -- wouldn't the lowered acceptable levels mean that my doc is reading the blood test right? I mean, my sluggishness and other symptoms seem to me like they must mean off the charts low thyroid hormone, but what you're saying sounds like lower levels of hormone are hot'n'trendy in medical circles these days. So... no extra Synthroid for me. Poo.

It used to be 4-6 was the upper range. My sister and I initially got tested around the same time, in late 1999. We both had a TSH of 5.6 and symptoms of hypothyroidism. The doctor tossed me on medication immediately. My sister's said hers was "borderline" and not worth treating. Mine was more modern.

If you're between about 0.5 and 2 or 3 depending on symptoms, then you're probably fine and it's something else. If you're above 2, your doctor should be looking at T3 and T4 to make sure they're okay, and perhaps increasing your dosage.

Oh no! That sucks.

Could something else be going on, maybe?

Yeah, Karsten thinks I have a cold or flu or something. I don't know. It's possible, but the symptoms that are bugging me most (lack of energy, inertia, mental fogginess, etc.) are suspiciously related to thyroid hormone levels. Bleah.
